Hydrogen and hydrogen-based low-carbon liquid fuels like ammonia are essential for the UK to reach net-zero greenhouse gases by 2050.

Most of the hydrogen we produce is high carbon from fossil fuels, with no carbon capture. We need lower carbon blue hydrogen and no carbon green hydrogen to help meet our sustainability targets.

Hydrogen's potential is enormous. A low carbon hydrogen society could reduce emissions, improve air quality, provide flexible energy and help us solve the problem of intermittent supply from renewable energy sources.

There are challenges to achieving widespread adoption of this technology, which UKRI is working to address.

Watch this video to find out how our investments in fuel cell technology, supply chain, hydrogen-powered eco transport and training facilities will help make a low carbon hydrogen society a reality.
