"Are you hot in those clothes?"
"Oh my gosh, they must have been so hot back then?"
"Were Victorian women hot in those clothes?"
"Women must have died from heatstroke in the 1800s!"
"Are you really wearing a corset when it's this hot?"

etc. etc. etc.

If you've ever worn historical costumes, whether it's Medieval, 18th-Century, Regency era, Victorian or Edwardian (it doesn't matter) the question that you get asked the most is "Are you hot in that?"
And while we all have different ways to answer this question, I don't think anyone's really gone out to attempt to get a real answer, with any real data. So, I thought it would be a great idea to ask Nicole and Chrissy to stand out in the Northern Nevada desert on a hot August day in different Victorian clothes as well as modern clothing to see if we could find a definitive answer to "Are you hot in that?".

The results may surprise you.

...or they may not. 😉

Using a very cool and hi-tech thermal scanner, we set off into the desert to scan the heat coming off of our bodies. We begin the experiment wearing full Victorian women's clothing. Chrissy is wearing an 1830s women's outfit featuring a chemise, split drawers, @Redthreaded 1830s corset, quilted petticoat, sleeve plumpers, silk dress, and cap. Nicole is wearing an 1860s women's ensemble featuring a chemise, 1860s style corset, hoop skirt, petticoats, and a wool bodice and skirt. I am wearing an 1880s sporting outfit, with a chemise, late Victorian corset, split drawers, lobster tail bustle/tonure, petticoat, skirt, apron, and the Truly Victorian Alexandra bodice out of cotton.

Once we finished the full clothing, we undress to our corsets, chemises, and drawers, run the test in just our Victorian undies. The second day, we stand out in "normal" modern clothing. Chrissy wears jeans and a t-shirt, Nicole in a cute polyester jumpsuit, and I wear leggings and a polyester dress I got from Everlane.

I hope you all enjoy this video! ❤️
