The second novel in the trilogy that inspired MOTHER 3 focuses on the life of Lucas, separated from his twin as a final test of will (much like the game’s Lucas & Claus forced into splitting apart). This proves to have harrowing consequences in The Proof, as Lucas finds himself unable to function without his brother. Mentally unstable and physically unwell, Lucas finds solace in a deformed child he begins to raise as his own. Connections to the game start to become even more apparent when Lucas and Mathias’s dynamic in The Proof draws parallel to Wess and Duster- with secrets revealed in the end that work to better understand creator Shigesato Itoi’s original intention for a scenario that “betrays the player."
