Ever since MOTHER 3's inception -all the way back when it was supposed to be released on N64- it's been known that Ágota Kristóf’s "Le Grand Cahier" (known in English as "The Notebook") trilogy inspired Shigesato Itoi in creating MOTHER 3. So much, in fact, that the twin brothers Lucas and Claus are based on the twin narrators of the same name. I finally got around to reading all three novels, and documented every other potential inspiration I could find. Some of this information has been shared online already, but a lot of it might surprise you as the novels are very... upsetting and disturbing. Topics include the similar fates for the boys' family, the reform of Tazmily village/war occupation, and a link between the novel's characters to Duster & Kumatora.
