Commercial logging is Solomon Islands’ biggest export and largest employer outside of the public service. But done without care it can also wreak havoc on the environment and communities surrounding it. Nowhere is that more obvious than Solomon Islands where logging has long been the economy’s biggest export.
In this story we visit the women in rural villages often exploited by those working in the industry. A UN report last year found some women are even sold to foreign workers for a bride price, and are vulnerable to violence and coercion in relationships with workers who are much older.
Reporter Chrisnrita Aumanu-Leong and cameraman Mannar Levo explore how women are left vulnerable after loggers leave the country, abandoning their wives and children without providing any maintenance.
