By now, everyone has heard of fortnite, the casual gaming juggernaut. Overnight, fortnite tik tok dances invaded the public domain, fortnite skins, fortnite memes, fortnite emotes, in the blink of an eye fortnite became omnipresent. The kids might not remember but there was a time when cod, call of duty, was the casual gaming king. Call of duty modern warfare 2, or mw2, the cod that came after the surprise success of cod 4 modern warfare and cod world at war, was a cultural lynchpin. Noob tubes, tactical nukes, boosters, mw2 trolling, cod commentaries, machinima, seananners, cod was what it meant to be a gamer. Mw2 brought us together. Then black ops came out and carried on this god tier success. Cod was not without detractors, but it was definitely the de facto gaming king. Battlefield, pubg, killzone, so many tried and failed to dethrone it. After black ops 2, things started going downhill. A stagnation if you will. Ghosts and advanced warfare were imposters in the face of titanfall 2's innovation. Cod was king no more.
And then fortnite's runaway success truly dethroned call of duty. Ninja, aka twitch streamer Tyler Blevins, was a sign of fortnite's integration into society. All the memes and stupid dances. The world had a new king.
The prodigal son did return and after losing its crown call of duty made a comeback with call of duty: warzone. Warzone stormed in and brought back the good old cod vibes again. For me and so many others. Warzone memes, warzone kills, warzone victories, the net loved warzone. Black ops cold war too is a solid sequel. Cod aint back to what it used to be, but it is back at least.
