On 31 August 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited the EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre in Brussels, Belgium.
In her statement to the press, President von der Leyen highlighted Europe’s response to this year’s early and intense wildfire season, including the activation of the Civil Protection Mechanism, the pre-positioning of nearly 800 firefighters, and support from 25 countries, including Ukraine for the first time.
She also pointed to the Centre’s wider role in responding to earthquakes, floods, health emergencies and other disasters both in Europe and globally.
Her core message is that European solidarity means acting quickly when help is needed, while also improving prevention and preparedness as crises become more frequent and complex.
