Earthquakes are caused by the sudden release of energy stored in rocks due to tectonic stress. When stress builds up beyond a rock's strength, it breaks along faults, releasing seismic waves.
𧱠Types of Faults:
Dip Slip Faults
β Vertical movement of rock blocks (normal/reverse).
Strike Slip Faults
β Horizontal movement of rock blocks (shear action).
π How It Builds Up:
Elastic stress accumulates over time.
Once it exceeds rock strength β sudden slip β earthquake.
Repeats in cycles as shown in the graph (stress-slip relationship).
