To prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons #NPT opened for signature in 1968. Today, 191 countries are party to it. The treaty entrusts the IAEA with a specific role in verifying States’ fulfilment of their non-proliferation obligations.
