Not sure how it came about, but the ladies of the View discuss how Kate's media frenzy compares to the Jesse James mistresses. I agree with the republican chick that the intial intentions may have been good and justifiable - provide for 8 young children. And I think with proper boundaries and a focus on the family it could have been done more reasonably. The Duggars are starting to be a little more commercialized, but they still truly put their family first and do not share embarassing moments of the kids, and I believe would stop the show in an instant for the betterment of their family. Gosselins on the other hand showed us embrassing moments of the kids, and had a gruelling 2 year run of 3 seasons that did not have any break in production - that's a hella lot of filming.
