How Does 2D Game Lighting Work? From Ape Out to Celeste, 2D games make use of a style of lighting which comprises of beams of light cast from the player. These light beams interact with physical objects in the level.
This video explains one method of implementing this system and also goes through a full tutorial for making a 2D additive lighting system in GameMaker, but the theory will be useful to any game you make.
