For over a century, developers and architects looked at a tiny strip of land along the Chicago River and declared it completely unbuildable. Today, it’s home to a 54-story skyscraper. In this episode of Docent Talks, the Chicago Architecture Center breaks down the gravity-defying engineering and construction secrets behind 150 North Riverside. Read the highlights below:

The 39-Foot Pinch Point
Trapped between active commuter train tracks and the river, the building has virtually no footprint on the ground. To survive the site constraints, the entire 1.2-million-square-foot tower tapers down into a sharp, narrow base that measures just 39 feet (12 meters) wide.

Water Pools at the Top (Tuned Mass Dampers)
How do you stop a massive cantilevered tower from swaying wildly in high winds? The engineers tucked giant, custom pools of water at the very top of the building to act as tuned mass dampers. When intense winds push the building in one direction, the water sloshes the exact opposite way, neutralizing the energy and stabilizing the frame.

Record-Breaking Steel
To support the intense load passing down into the central core, the building was framed using the highest-strength structural steel available in the United States at the time of construction.

Built Entirely from Barges
Because the ground footprint was so incredibly tight, there was no staging room for heavy machinery, construction cranes, or dump trucks. To make the build possible, crews had to float heavy construction equipment out onto barges on the Chicago River, staging the entire foundational phase directly from the water.
