How do you start a vintage flip clock?
That depends on what kind of clock you have in your hands.
This is a beautiful Howard Miller Cylinder Clock which uses a Copal 2 mechanism. Essentially this the same mechanism that is in a Copal Caslon 101. This is a synchronous self-starting motor. All you do is plug it in. If it doesn't start, nine times out of ten all it needs is for the motor to be oiled.

But what about these kinds of flip clocks. The battery operated ones with this starting lever.
The problem is that many people try to push this lever down hard, like they were trying to start a motorcycle. But what you need to understand is that it's not in the pushing down that starts the clock, but in the letting go. Gently letting the lever go gets this whirligig spinning. And Yes, it's called a whirligig.
