Did you know meteorologists have standard terms to describe the size of hail? Before we get into those comparisons, it helps to understand how hail actually forms.
Strong thunderstorms contain powerful updrafts, currents of air rushing upward through the storm. These updrafts can lift water droplets high above the freezing level, where they freeze and begin to grow. As long as the updraft is strong enough to keep the hailstone suspended, more water freezes onto it, building layer after layer.
Eventually the hailstone becomes too heavy for the updraft to support,
