I highly recommend a two-part strategy. First, build your audience from your surrounding markets. Become a weekend warrior, if you must. Hit the two or three markets near you regularly, building your audience in those markets.
Secondly, take advantage of the resources in your market that are NOT part of your genre, like producers. Local assets outside your genre can be a huge advantage in differentiating yourself and your music.
