As Notting Hill Genesis and Hill Group sought to regenerate The Aylesbury Estate in Walworth, London, their first step was to engage the community and get them involved in the design of their new homes. One of the ways they did this was by hosting an art workshop, where residents came up with a mandala design incorporating architectural features from the iconic estate. After simplifying the design, Sapphire came up with an engineering solution allowing us to laser cut the mandala into the balcony soffits (undersides) across the first new buildings. Now, when residents look up, they can be reminded of their former homes, and admire the artwork created by their community. In this video, we ask what it means for the children of the Aylesbury Estate to see their artwork immortalised on the regenerated Aylesbury Estate.
