The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate (FFG-7) was a class of guided-missile frigates built for the U.S. Navy and later operated by numerous allied navies. Designed for escort and general-purpose roles, the Perry-class emphasized affordability, reliability, and survivability, making it a workhorse of the fleet from the late 1970s to the early 2000s.
Armed with a Mk 13 missile launcher (capable of firing SM-1 SAMs and Harpoon anti-ship missiles), a 76mm Mk 75 naval gun, and close-in weapon systems (CIWS), it was well-suited for convoy protection, anti-submarine warfare (ASW) with SH-60 Seahawk helicopters, and general fleet support. However, its missile launcher was later removed in U.S. service, reducing its offensive capabilities.
Though retired from the U.S. Navy by 2015, many Oliver Hazard Perry frigates continue to serve in allied fleets worldwide due to their sturdy design, upgrade potential, and cost-effectiveness. Some nations have modernized them with new combat systems, extending their operational lifespan well into the 21st century.
