What if we could get to Proxima Centauri in 40 years? Modern rockets would take 30,000 years to make the journey, but according to proponents, antimatter reactors could take that down to just 40 years. But how do they work? And when can we expect them?

Antimatter was first theorised by Paul Dirac, the father quantum electrodynamics, when he discovered in 1928 that both positive and negative energy solution would satisfy his relativistic version of the Schrödinger wave equation for electrons meaning that the electron might have an equal but opposite particle in existence, that had the same mass and spin but the opposite charge, an anti-electron).
