A lot of people think a breaker is “pushing out” amps like a tiny power pump. In this video we open that idea up, crack breakers apart, and show what they are actually doing in your home panel. We walk through why the numbers on the handle matter, what really happens when a circuit is overloaded or shorted, and why a 2-pole 20 is not magically a 40 amp monster. ⚡
You’ll see inside modern residential breakers, talk about what’s going on with thermal and magnetic tripping, and then move into the specialty stuff you’re actually installing now: GFCI, AFCI, and dual-function breakers. We look at how they protect people around water and from arcs, why the test buttons matter, and what those little indicator lights are trying to tell you.
We also hit panel layout realities: using tandems to gain space, where that makes sense, and why mixing random breaker brands in the wrong panel can create real problems instead of solving them. If you’ve ever wondered what’s safe, what’s sketchy, and what’s just internet argument fuel, this one’s for you. 🔧
Huge thanks to ABB for supporting this video. We’re working inside their ReliaHome P-Series plug-on neutral panel and talking about how it plays with the ABB family many of you already use on jobs, like Steel City metallic boxes and Carlon blue boxes.
