Many schools have shifted away from assigning whole books, instead opting for excerpts and text passages. Researchers, teachers, and policymakers are pushing back on this trend, pointing to the many benefits—both educational and moral—of reading full works of literature.
Of course, assigning a whole book is easy enough; ensuring that students read and learn from it is not. In this web event, veteran educator Doug Lemov will present how to help students rise to the challenge of complex literature. He will be joined by Mike Austin, director of curriculum at Great Hearts Academies, and award-winning, Baltimore-based English teacher Kyair Butts. In a panel moderated by Robert Pondiscio, these educators will discuss how best to restore whole books to K–12 classrooms.
