How can we design buildings and public spaces that genuinely work for everyone, drawing on inclusive design, universal design, and accessibility principles?

To strengthen our multidisciplinary approach and the value our teams deliver, we’ve united eleven specialist disciplines into a single collaborative community at Buro Happold.

Within this community, our Inclusive Environments team works hand in hand with clients, designers, and fellow specialists to embed accessibility and inclusion as a core design driver – not an afterthought, from concept through to delivery and ongoing operation.

By understanding how people with different needs experience buildings and spaces, we help teams make better decisions from early stages, reducing risk and moving projects beyond baseline compliance toward environments that support dignity, independence, and belonging.

Working in close collaboration with colleagues from disciplines such as Acoustics, Lighting, and People Flow, our Inclusive Environments team integrates inclusive thinking at every scale - from city‑wide masterplans to the smallest design details.

With global experience and deep technical leadership – including team members who were Technical Authors on PAS 6463 (Neurodiversity and the Built Environment) and Inclusive Design Standards for organisations such as the London Legacy Development Corporation – we help clients embed accessibility and inclusion into both design and management strategies, creating places that are more usable, resilient and successful for everyone.

Together, we’re shaping a built environment that champions equity, accessibility, and human experience – and delivers better outcomes for people, projects and communities.
