Two decades of rapid economic growth and urbanisation have put unprecedented strain on India’s environment. Air and water pollution and are a threat to India’s future growth and prosperity. Increasing volumes of waste are being produced, yet in areas such as e-waste, recycling technologies and strategies are still in their infancy. Compounding all of this is climate change, which will make India's cities, towns and villages hotter and harder to live in over the coming decades.
Incorporating innovative smart technologies into India’s energy, water, and urban infrastructures and waste ecosystem can help make India’s environment cleaner, and protect the country from the effects of a warming climate.
In this Question Marks seminar, Dr Komali Yenneti and Dr Vaibhav Gaikwad from the University of New South Wales will discuss the critical smart technologies that are being developed and utilised to help clean India’s environment and recycle its waste.
They will be joined in discussion by Dr Meenakshi Arora, Melbourne School of Engineering and Professor Robin Jeffrey, Australian National University.

Dr Komali Yenneti’s research focuses on contemporary environmental policy and projects, such as sustainable smart cities, low-carbon urban development and energy transitions across cities, regions and communities in the Asia-Pacific.
Dr Vaibhav Gaikwad works on the development of composite fabrication technology from recycled wood and plastic, e-waste recycling, waste characterisation and life-cycle assessment.
