What can I add to a landscape painting to hint at a human story? How about a pair of bicycles and a family walking on the road?
The picture is still about space and light and the season, but now there's something to identify with, something to animate the space.
I start with pencil and then semi-transparent washes of watercolor and a few touches of opaque gouache. Using a fine brush I add a gravel road is lined with bare trees, vines, and grassy fields.
