🔬 Could lasers help transform cancer treatment?
When ultra-intense lasers interact with specially designed targets, they can generate powerful proton and ion beams capable of delivering highly precise cancer treatments. By depositing most of their energy directly within a tumour, these particles have the potential to maximise treatment effectiveness while reducing damage to healthy tissue.
The Laser Hybrid Accelerator for Radiobiological Applications (LhARA) is exploring how laser-driven particle beams could make advanced cancer therapies more accessible by replacing today’s large, costly facilities with compact systems suitable for standard clinical settings.
🎥 Watch Dr Josie McGarrigle from the Department of Physics at Imperial College London explain how lasers could play a role in the future of cancer treatment.
You can also meet the team and learn more about LhARA at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition, where LhARA will have a dedicated stand showcasing this exciting research.
