How Awareness Breaks the Automatic Reaction Pattern That Controls You.
Have you ever noticed how you react before you even get a chance to choose? Someone says one sentence and suddenly you are angry. Someone ignores you and your mood drops. A small comment stays in your head the whole day. Pause for a second and ask yourself honestly, are you really living, or are you just reacting on autopilot?
Most of us believe we are in control of our lives, but if you observe closely, you will see a strange truth. The majority of your day is not lived consciously. It is lived mechanically. Same reactions, same emotional loops, same inner dialogues, again and again. The mind already knows how it will react, even before the situation fully unfolds. And the scary part is, you call this “me”.
Now here is a question I want you to sit with. When you get angry, is that anger truly you, or is it something happening inside you? When fear arises, are you fear, or are you noticing fear? This single distinction changes everything.
Automatic reaction patterns are not born today. They are old. Some are from childhood, some from past experiences, some from repeated emotional conditioning. Your nervous system learned shortcuts. When this happens, react like that. When that trigger appears, feel this emotion. Over time, these shortcuts become so fast that they feel like identity. You stop seeing the gap between stimulus and response.
Awareness creates that gap.
Awareness does not fight reactions. It does not suppress anger or fear. It simply watches. And this watching is powerful, more powerful than force. The moment you become aware of a reaction, something strange happens. The reaction loses its total grip. It still arises, but it does not possess you fully.
Think about it. Can you be completely lost in anger and aware of anger at the same time? No. Awareness and unconsciousness cannot coexist fully. The moment awareness enters, the pattern starts weakening.
Next time someone triggers you, instead of immediately reacting, try this. Just notice what is happening in the body. Is there tightness in the chest? Heat in the face? A rush of thoughts? Do not label it as good or bad. Just observe it like a scientist watching a process. Ask yourself, what exactly is happening inside me right now?
You will see that reactions are not solid. They are sensations, thoughts, energy movements. They come, peak, and if not fueled, they dissolve. The problem is not the reaction itself. The problem is identification. The moment you say, this is me, this is justified, this must be expressed, you feed it.
Awareness starves the pattern without violence.
Over time, something beautiful happens. The same triggers appear, but the intensity reduces. The gap becomes wider. You start responding instead of reacting. And response has intelligence. Response has choice. Reaction has history.
Let me ask you one last question. If your reactions were truly you, then why do they change when you are aware of them? Why do they lose power when watched?
That which disappears under awareness cannot be your true nature. Awareness is not a technique. It is your original state. And the more you rest in it, the less your past controls your present.
So today, do not try to change yourself. Just notice yourself. That noticing alone is the beginning of freedom.
