Autoimmunity is an important piece of the thyroid disease puzzle.

In some autoimmune thyroid conditions, antibodies can interact with TSH receptors and stimulate the thyroid, contributing to a hyperthyroid pattern. In other cases, autoimmune activity can damage thyroid tissue and contribute to under-functioning.

This is one reason thyroid disorders can’t always be understood as simply “too much” or “too little” thyroid function. The underlying immune pattern matters too.
