In dark times, artists and storytellers have a responsibility to craft counter-narratives that challenge dominant ideologies and offer hope. In this panel talk about the artwork AFTER THE END at ACMI in 2024, futurist and filmmaker Liam Young explores the urgent need for artists to engage with the political and cultural landscape, especially with the looming spectre of #fascism in the United States following the election of Donald #trump. Young discusses the power of world-building, the importance of resisting dystopian despair, and the role of new media in shaping alternative futures.

$Mikala Dwyer on Weights of Light | Artwork at ACMI Mikala Dwyer explains how the transparent forms in her new commission Weights of Light let us imagine ourselves drawn through them. Showing at ACMI until 13 Nov 2022. A family of translucent and ethereal bodies glide through the air, multiplying as their reflections spread across windows and glass surfaces. Depending on your perspective, and how they absorb and refract the light, they appear solid or intangible, flicking between visibility and invisibility. After all, these are “empty sculptures”, “shapes of nothing” according to artist Mikala Dwyer. But through the simple phenomena of light, material and form, and by contorting scale, Dwyer lets us imagine ourselves somehow drawn through them, like the atrium windows drawing the outside light, that elemental medium that has endlessly fascinated artists. This major new commission by contemporary Australian artist Mikala Dwyer is on display in ACMI’s largest foyer.
