Scripps News | How an influx of Haitian immigrants turned Springfield into a campaign flashpoint @scrippsnews | Uploaded September 2024 | Updated October 2024, 3 days ago.
One of the most talked-about moments in Tuesday's presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump was Trump's claim that Haitian immigrants in the small town of Springfield, Ohio, were abducting and eating their neighbors dogs, cats, and other pets.

That claim has been debunked by city officials several times in Springfield. But animosity toward the thousands of Haitians who have settled in the city remains very real and has even become a campaign flashpoint among politicians.

It stems in part from a traffic accident last year in which a minivan driven by a Haitian man struck a school bus, killing Aiden Clark, an 11-year-old boy. The boy's parents are now demanding that Trump and other politicians stop spreading hate in the name of their son.
