Here's how a torque converter works on your car!
The torque converter is situated between the engine and the transmission on a car with an automatic transmission or continuously variable transmission.
The engine's crankshaft drives the flex plate which turns the torque converter in the transmission bell housing. The torque converter has a pump side, which flings fluid to the outside of the housing. The force of the fluid turns the turbine, which spins the transmission. In between the pump and the turbine is the stator, which forces the direction of the fluid to change.
There are three main functions of a torque converter:
1. Torque multiplication to increase the amount of torque for acceleration when taking off from a standstill.
2. Slippage at idle to allow the wheels to remain stationary while the engine is still rotating at a standstill in gear.
3. Torque converter lockup to minimize any slippage between the input and output when the vehicle is it cruising speed.
