I started watching baseball a year ago. After watching – and loving – the TV show “A League of Their Own,” I became interested in watching an actual baseball game, even though I knew very little about the sport.
One of the very first games I watched was Game 1 of the ALDS between the Astros and the Mariners. The Astros were losing the game; bottom of the 9th and they were down by 2. But then they walked it off with a 3-run home run by Yordan Álvarez. I had never heard of the Houston Astros up until that point, but I just thought that was the coolest thing ever.
Even though initially I didn’t completely know or understand the rules of baseball, I decided to keep on watching these Houston Astros. The more games I watched, the more I understood how baseball worked. (Wikipedia was very helpful too. LOL) And the more games I watched, the more I loved the team.
So, the Astros went on to sweep the Mariners in the ALDS, then they swept the Yankees in the ALCS, and they ended up winning the World Series against the Phillies. Because of the time difference (I’m from Portugal), some days I stayed up really late to watch the games (especially the World Series), but it was worth it every hour I didn’t sleep. Before I knew it, I had fallen in love with a game I (still) knew very little about, a team I didn’t even knew existed, and players I had never heard about.
Since then, baseball and the Houston Astros have become one of my greatest passions. 2023 was my first full season of watching baseball and boy oh boy, what a rollercoaster it was! Especially for these Astros of mine. There were a lot of ups, but there were also a lot of downs – and several mild heart attacks in between. (Ryan Pressly, I’m looking at you.) Even though it wasn’t always sunshine and roses, one thing remained the same: my love for this team.
So, I wanted to make this little video to show my love and appreciation for this wonderful group of people. I love every single one of you, and thank you for giving me so much joy this year.
P.S.: Whoever wins the NLCS, I hope they destroy the effin' Rangers in the World Series. EDIT: The Diamondbacks won the National League, so LFG D-backs!!!!
