So what exactly is the difference between housewraps, self adhered membranes, and fluid applied WRBs?
When it comes to water control and air tightness, choosing the proper type of WRB (water/weather resistive barrier) is critical to the durability, performance, and longevity of a building. Housewraps or building wraps are attached to the sheathing with mechanical fasteners, while self-adhered WRBs are bonded using glues or adhesives. Fluid applied membranes are rolled or sprayed onto the substrate and cure into a monolithic water and air control layer. As our homes and buildings are designed to be more thermally efficient and utilize more moisture sensitive materials, we need to be doing everything we can to keep water out of the envelope, while allowing the assemblies to dry if they ever got wet.
