Synopsis: A man is trapped in a seemingly endless house with only a lighter, a map, and something unknown lurking in the dark.
This movie was shot entirely on a smartphone.
DIRECTORS STATEMENT
Earlier this year, we had a feature filmed planned. It was written, storyboarded, actors were hired, schedule was set, locations were locked. Then COVID happened. Instead of waiting around and doing nothing, we decided to each direct our own feature film in quarantine.
This movie was made out of creative frustration. I had wanted to shoot a different movie on my own in quarantine, but went into the project expecting perfection (even though I was a one man crew). After giving up on that project despite shooting a third of it, I thought that I didn't have what it took to shoot a movie alone. I kicked around ideas that I thought could work instead, but I felt that none of them excited me. I nearly gave up on the idea of solo filmmaking, but I decided that I would give myself two nights to film something. Anything. House is what came from those two nights (plus an extra day).
This movie is strange. I don't have all the answers to what it means. Most of it was made up as I went, but nonetheless I hope that you find it to be entertaining, and that you let yourself sit through the emotions that the movie makes you feel. (Best watched with headphones on, and alone in the dark).
Making a movie alone is hard. You really have to depend on your own intuition when it comes to your creative choices. This process made me abandon my ideas of what making a "perfect movie" should look like. A movie doesn't need to have professional lighting, tack sharp focus, and amazing color. A movie just needs to be the thing you wanted to make. That's what House is for me.
