House On Maple Street was inspired by the home of
a friend of Walton, a place he could visit unannounced
and find an honest and generous welcome. "Whatever
I needed for my leisure time was there and available,"
Cedar says, "a tennis racket, a movie camera, a type.
writer, you name it. I remember the house and its owner
warmly." The ominous introduction may indicate the
presence of a ghost in the house on Maple Street, but
soon we're into happy 4/4 time and an exploratory
Mobley solo, with Higgins' drums chattering away in
empathy. Brahms may not have influenced any of these
musicians but he would certainly have understood the
ending. Indeed, he could have written it.
