Developed by the independent Swedish studio Dennaton Games, this brutal retro-style action game is reminiscent of the iconic first installment of the Grand Theft Auto series. Set in the 1980s in Miami, the game's protagonist is a muscular thug who, following mysterious messages left on his answering machine, commits a series of brutal acts of violence.
Hotline Miami was created by Jonatan Söderström, a talented Swedish programmer known as "Cactus," the creator of numerous unusual indie games, in collaboration with musician Dennis Wedin of the band Fucking Warewolf ASSO. Together, under the banner of Dennation Games, they created a game that bears a strong resemblance to the first Grand Theft Auto.
The game takes place in Miami in the 1980s. The plot revolves around mysterious messages left on the protagonist's answering machine, urging him to commit acts of brutal violence.
The player-controlled muscular assassin completes a series of over twenty multi-level missions. These tasks typically involve traversing several locations and slaughtering everyone within. The player must skillfully navigate between stealth, silently eliminating enemies, and direct confrontations with large groups of enemies.
Since numerous armed opponents stand in the way, players have 35 weapons at their disposal. To subdue enemies, players can use pistols, rifles, shotguns, as well as baseball bats, crowbars, knives, and, as a last resort, their own hands and feet. The fast-paced action requires the ability to switch between firearms and melee weapons. Rubber masks are also a valuable piece of equipment. There are 25 of these in the game, each granting unique abilities that significantly alter the gameplay. Each kill awards points. Combat is incredibly challenging, as your character can die with a single shot. This forces the player to demonstrate tremendous dexterity and constantly think of ways to eliminate each group of enemies while avoiding a fatal blow.
The simple, retro graphics aren't far removed from the original GTA. The camera is positioned above the player character, offering a bird's-eye view of the surroundings. The story is told through "talking heads"—a feature familiar from older games—which perfectly complements the 16-bit graphics. The kill animations are incredibly brutal—the player not only shoots enemies but can also attack them at close range with a bat or knife, and, for good measure, brutally kick them to death. Bullets rip enemies apart, blood sprays everywhere, and the bodies of the dead lie in pools of blood.
Hotline Miami's style harkens back to the 1980s—Miami, bathed in neon light, shimmers with vibrant colors, and the period-specific music blends beautifully with the overall atmosphere.
