Jimmy Page said in an interview that they experimented with taking the front head off Bonzo's bass drum while recording the tracks for In Through The Out Door. To quote Jimmy... "The album sounds a little bit contained. It was a state-of-the-art studio, but there was no ambience. We had to take the front bass skin off John Bonham’s drums. Then we had to use a machine to create a fake ambience."
Hmmm...??
My reason for taking off the front head was I installed a cymbal mount and so I decided to leave it off and see how it sounds and feels to play. I'm enjoying the difference but soon I'll put the reso back on. In the meantime here's 🌭
