Basic Horse Training | Horse Training - First Ride Under Saddle @BasicHorseTraining | Uploaded May 2023 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
Training a horse to be ridden is, for me, one of my favourite things to do. The first ride under saddle is always interesting as, from our groundwork, we have some idea how our horse will react, but we can never be sure; as for the horse, we have disappeared from in front of them to where they can't always see us.
We must remember that horses are horses, and they have an inbuilt "flight reflex" that has kept them alive as a species. You can do all the work possible, and still, sometimes, it will be triggered. It may not even be the first ride when these things happen, as with this mare. It was the second ride. This mare is a sensitive, reactive mare, and when her flight reflex kicked in, it was quick and rather explosive. Once it was over, I needed to continue as if nothing had happened. There was no blaming her for it as it is a reflex, and although I had worked to help her to control it, in this instance, she couldn't.
