Karl and Sanna are a young urban couple who volunteer to work and live at a remote farm in an attempt to get closer to “nature”. There they are instructed by the old, stern but friendly farmer widow by the name of Anne who runs the farm alone after her husband's death. The first job they have is to put up a fence to expand the pastures for the sheep. After this they are led into the barn to meet what Anne calls a “Tursemorkel”. In the barn they are met with a large and strange mushroom-like growth. It’s bigger than a man and looms in the corner of the dark room. The couple are instructed to care for it by cleaning out holes that secrete a pungent fluid. Sanna is fascinated by the “Tursemorkel” while Karl feels threatened by it at first. They both develop separate relationships with it and are slowly transformed by it’s primordial power. The changes in them threaten the integrity of their relationship and their lives.
