Its short 97 year history was filled with tragedy as it first opened in 1916 as a Tuberculosis Sanatorium to treat people who were battling the deadly disease in human history. Many lost the fight against consumption as the hospital searched for the cure, and many believe the lost souls of patients still wander the halls of the many buildings still left here. In 1956 the hospital started to house patients with severe developmental disabilities and mental illness and was called the Lawrence Flick State Hospital. Its believed some of these patients may still haunt these halls as well. In 1983 the hospital closed and was empty for 4 years while the state of Pennsylvania spent $20.6 million to convert the complex into a prison. In 1987 State Correctional Institution (SCI) Cresson was opened and some of the most violent inmates in the state of Pennsylvania started to call it home. Many of these inmates were aware of the tragic history of the property they now lived in and some even believed the prison was cursed, and an evil cloud was draped over the complex. As inmate violence occurred within the population it only added to the haunted reputation of Cresson. The facility closed and the inmates were transferred out of the prison in 2013, and the true ghost stories of Cresson continued, but this time from explorers who would sneak into the empty buildings. In 2020, the property was purchased by Big House Produce who then opened the property for tours and ghost hunts in 2021. $The Haunting of Cresson State Prison: An Evil Monster Hides Here.. On this adventure, we were invited by @AmysCrypt to one of the most haunted prisons in America... Cresson State Prison in Cresson, Pennsylvania. This place has seen tragedy, headache, and pain unlike any other place in the country. When it closed in 2013 it was a state prison, but it was built as a tuberculosis sanatorium that lost thousands of patients. Then for 30 years it was a psychiatric hospital, and finally became a correctional institution in 1987. From 1990 - 1996 it was the home to a notorious inmate... a monster named Joseph Kallinger. This man manipulated his teenage son into helping him take the lives of at least 3 people, and when he was caught, he blamed it on hallucinations that plagued his mind. The voice of god telling him to do harm. These phantom voices controlled his every action and made him do the most terrifying and terrible things. In 1996, after decades of incarceration, Kallinger met his end here at SCI Cresson. Now, its believed his spirit still roams this prison. This is PART 1 of a two night investigation. In this first part we will focus on the prison history and spirits of inmates that are still said to haunt this place. In PART 2 we will spend the second night exploring the history of the Sanatorium. Cresson Sanatorium and Prison is a different kind of haunting. This place is a hotbed for paranormal activity and many people have been witness to it.
