I developed the vertical Magic Buttonhole many years ago (fully filmed on Finesse Your Knitting 1 DVD) but was asked recently if it would work on fabric folded perpendicular to the rows - and it does. It's reverse stocking stitch graft that unites both layers of the band very elegantly.
