A mashup of "Horizon" and "Horizon Ouverture" by Daft Punk, from the 10th anniversary edition of Random Access Memories.
I absolutely love this bonus track. The climax near the end of the tune is a fantastic showcase of the difference between programmed and live drumming. So much of the power and emotion of that moment comes from the arrival of that big, room-y drum sound. RAM makes use of such beautiful airy drums. There's this modern trend for drums to be as crunchy and compressed as possible to more emulate a drum machine (which is a sound I love), but something about the clear sound of the drums on this record makes songs like this infinitely more impactful. The snare drum feels real. You can actually hear the head of the bass drum. This tune makes that difference so much more obvious when the programmed drums fade into JR playing that same groove. With this mashup, I wanted to emphasize that moment even more by adding the stellar orchestral and choir arrangement that was recently released with the 10th-anniversary edition of the album. I'm proud of how it turned out.
