A playthrough of Jaleco's 1989 basketball game for the NES, Hoops.

In this video, I begin with a couple one-on-one games before moving on to the two-on-two mode at 6:10.

In 1987, Jaleco made a big splash in the NES baseball market with the release of the incredibly popular Bases Loaded. With their confidence buoyed by that success, they commissioned the production of several new Nintendo sports carts - Bases Loaded II, Goal!, Racket Attack, and Hoops - to be released over the next couple of years, and these games formed the backbone of Jaleco's "Moero!!" series in Japan.

All four reviewed and sold well, but Hoops (originally called 燃えろ!! ジュニアバスケット / _Moero!! Junior Basketball_ ) was the one that drew my attention. Unlike the rest, Hoops wasn't an attempt to faithfully depict its sport the way it was seen on TV.

Hoops is an arcade-style, half-court, two-on-two game of street basketball. You create a balanced team from a pool of eight colorful ballers, each of whom has their own strengths and weaknesses to consider, and the aim is to take your duo to the top by cleaning up in a series of fifteen matches.

The game goes light on options, but the gameplay has enough substance to keep things interesting, the controls are easy to wrap your head around, and the presentation is solid for a mid-gen NES release. The character animations are fairly smooth, the courts are detailed, the Double Dribble-style cutscenes make for some stylish breaks in the action, and the players are all given a welcome bit of personality. The single-player game provides a solid sense of progression and is capped off with a slick ending sequence, but like most sports games, the real fun comes from playing this one with a buddy.

Hoops is basic by modern standards, but developer Aicom nailed the fundamentals and played to the strengths of the console. In 1989, this was a great way to get your basketball fix on the NES.
