This was an interesting theme, that was left rather wide open to interpretation! My first thought, when I think "tribe", is my huge, amazing hoop and flow arts family that I have in Columbia. They ARE my tribe. Making hoop dance tribal, for me.
The music, while not typical tribal or world beat, was chosen because of it being suggested that we should not choose something that doesn't move us. Tribal dance is normally a body and soul, ethereal, mind-blowing experience. It's flow. I was hesitant to choose something that wasn't a regular, go-to, makes me want to grab a hoop song. So "Bedroom Hymns" by Florence + The Machine was the winner. The rawness of the vocals, the heavy drum beat and the talk of idols and altars in the lyrics lends it at tribal feel anyway.
Letting go and getting into "flow" in front of the camera is hard, especially when trying to make sure to throw in some flashy tricks too :-D but this video was a lot of fun to make, hooping wise. Despite bruising my face and straining a hip muscle.
