Earwig was admitted late night into the early morning of 5/17-5/18 from Buckroe Fishing Pier. This Kemp's ridley sea turtle had a large hook along the left inside of its mouth that followed the jaw line up and actually entered the orbit of its eye. Our veterinarian is a PRO and skillfully removed that hook with no damage to the eye!

Earwig spent several weeks at our Stranding facility receiving treatment. Along with eye medications, Earwig received a course of antibiotics and pain relievers/anti-inflammatories. S/he was very active and despite being hooked in the mouth still had a great appetite during its stay.

On June 20, 2021, Earwig was returned to his home. Thanks to our Stranding Response Team and our Pier Partners for their efforts to get a healthy Earwig back to the ocean 💕

❗️If you accidentally hook a sea turtle❗️ please call us on our 24 hour Stranding Response Hotline at (757) 385-7575. We would like to examine ALL hooked sea turtles even if the angler believes the animal to be hook free because of the prevalence of secondary hooks or conditions.
