In this video I show how to quickly replace worn out lift struts. This works the same whether they are for your vehicles hood, rear hatch, or even your trucks tool box lid. Once worn out, the only real fix is to replace them. Thankfully they are inexpensive and easy to find online and at most auto parts stores.
For most automobile maintenance and repairs, the first step is to open the hood. Opening the hood is how you access the engine compartment, where most fluid reservoirs, batteries, filters and fuses are accessed for routine checks and/or replacement. To open the hood, most vehicles have a handle or latch inside the passenger cabin. Pulling this handle releases the first part of the hood mechanism. You then have to press a hood release which on most vehicles is just behind and beneath the bottom front rim of the hood. This second release handle actuates and opens the hood latch. In many vehicles, the hood is then supported open by gas struts. Depending on the size of the car and the weight of the hood or lift gate, these struts vary in size and lifting strength, and when properly sized will help smoothly open and provide support.
