Timothy Scarlett specializes in interdisciplinary public archaeology. An associate professor of archaeology and anthropology at Michigan Tech, he works collaboratively with numerous colleges and departments, including energy and environmental policy, and is a faculty member in the Department of Social Science’s one-of-a-kind and highly respected Industrial Heritage and Archaeology program.
Scarlett’s vision of collaboration and inclusive archaeology creates spaces for communities to plan just and sustainable futures that respect their sense of place. On the Pumped Underground Storage Hydro (PUSH) team he shares his particular expertise in post-mining communities as well as his appreciation for the post-mining region he calls home on Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. His field and lab research incorporates education, heritage tourism, new media documentation and community-based collaboration that sparks conversations on social and energy justice.
