$AGU22 Poster Chat: Eric Edmund Carnegie postdoc Eric Edmund presented, Thermal Conductivity of FeS at Martian Core Conditions at AGU 2022. Abstract: Magnetic remanence of ancient martian crust indicates that Mars once had an active dynamo, likely driven by thermal convection. Recent measurements of the geodetic and seismic properties of Mars by the INSIGHT mission have shown that the Martian core is highly enriched in S, with some quantity of O and/or H. However, the transport properties of relevant alloy systems are highly uncertain, necessitating further constraints to better understand the history and thermal evolution of Mars. Here we present direct thermal conductivity measurements performed between 33 and 72 GPa, and 1500 to 3000 K. These measurements are complemented by high-temperature and high-pressure reflectivity and synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements which provide new constraints on phase transitions and the electronic properties of FeS. These experiments provide new insights into the composition-dependence of heat flow in the Martian interior, and the history of the martian dynamo.
