In November of 2010, newlyweds Anni Dewani (Sweden) and Shrien Dewani (UK) went on a honeymoon to Cape Town, South Africa. On the second night in town, they hired a taxi and during that ride, they were carjacked, robbed, and Anni Dewani was shot and killed. The taxi driver, his friend/fixer and two local robbers were arrested. Three were convicted and the fourth turned state's witness.
A robbery and kidnapping gone bad....not something entirely unusual in a high crime city, but is this what actually happened? The taxi driver claimed that this was no ordinary street crime. He claimed Shrien Dewani had hired him to arrange the murder of his new wife. The South African government and many of the people believed he was guilty and he went to trial. He was acquitted and exonerated. However, many to this day believe he got away with murder.
Which is true? A carjacking gone bad or a hired hit? Does it make sense that on the very day the couple arrived in Cape Town that the husband would hire the driver to help kill his wife? Or was this just a pack of lies from the guilty men and an effort by the South African government to blame a UK citizen for the crime in order to prevent harm to the tourist industry?
It a very perplexing case. You can see two documentaries about the case: "Anni: The Honeymoon Murder" on Investigation Discovery if you have that channel. It has four episodes and is quite decent. You can also watch a BBC documentary on YouTube, "Who Killed Anni Dewani?" (not so good, but free). youtu.be/BSKdTw_5DIw?si=r4HuyV9XHvj-m4qF
