As we've watched recent worrying developments in the UN when the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) lead a coalition that removed sexual orientation from UN resolution condemning unjustified executions. The tensions between religion and homophobia surfaced again. Reminding us not only of the stupidity of letting countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran to even be allowed to vote on such matters, but on the apparent danger religion pose on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual community.

It is not a new notion among atheist, that including many other minorities, the LGBT community have been subject to horrendous crimes, vilification, discrimination and ridicule. And yet I decided to give a different aspect then my usual "fuck religion".

While doing some research about a video I want to do about religion and homophobia I stumbled across a very interesting debate that took place in 2008 and arranged by the Swedish Humanist Association. The debate centers around the question: "Is religion a hotbed for Homophobia" (link down). Now most of the talkers bashed religion like hell, but there was one debater, Anna Karin Hammar who's a priest in the Church of Sweden and a Lesbian and her assertion was that religion can and should be reformed and by doing that it will actually make it a hotbed of tolerance (that'll be the day). Then I saw rozeboosje's video (youtube.com/watch?v=KNP4n_X1Qy8) where he addressed the topic of laying off religion I decided to put up this video, you know, just to cool things down a bit (even within myself)...
Enjoy and tell me what you think.

Here's the description of the debate itself:
A debate in Pride House (Stadsteatern) studio 3, arranged by The Swedish Humanist Association Wednesday July 30 2008 All religions create more or less a hotbed for oppression of gay people, for example in the form of cruel punishments or resistance against reforms as marriage for gay people. Is it true? What is background? What can be done to change the situation by the humanist movement and the religious communions? Participants: - Taslima Nasrin, a physician, a writer, a feminist, human rights activist and a secular humanist from Bangladesh - Barbro Westerholm, former Director General of the National Board of Health and Welfare, liberal Member of the Swedish Parliament - Anna Karin Hammar, diocesan officer, priest in Church of Sweden, Uppsala - Sonny Van De Steene, International Humanist Ethical Union, Flemish Cultural Lesbian and Gay Organisation Ongehoordt, Brussels - Andrew Copson, The Gay & Lesbian Humanist Association, London Discussion leaders: - Christer Sturmark, President of the Swedish Humanist Association - Carl-Johan Kleberg, former President of the Swedish Humanist Association.
