A Medina man faces charges after authorities said he seriously injured his left hand with a homemade bomb, leading investigators to discover several explosives and bomb-making materials at a home, according to the Orleans County Major Felony Crime Task Force.
First responders were called Aug. 6 to a home on Hellert Road in Shelby after receiving a report that a 30-year-old man had blown his hand off with a firework and was bleeding uncontrollably, authorities said. They found Daniel Ray, 30, with extensive wounds to his left hand and applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.
"Based on the explosion that happened there, we obtained a search warrant for the residence, and what we found were bomb-making materials," said Brett Sobieraski, an investigator with the Orleans County Major Felony Crime Task Force.
Ray was taken to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for treatment. Investigators searching the home found debris from an exploded bomb, multiple bomb-making supplies, highly explosive powders, fuses and an illegally possessed loaded handgun, authorities said.
Investigators also discovered two live homemade bombs that were considered too dangerous to transport.
"We found two live bombs that were so dangerous, they had to explode them on the property," Sobieraski said. "They couldn't take them away."
Sobieraski described the devices as pipe bombs made from PVC rather than metal.
"They were homemade, large explosives that could have caused a lot of damage," he said.
Authorities said they do not believe Ray intended to target a specific person or building with the explosives. Investigators instead believe he was making the devices to sell to people throughout Orleans County.
Ray was treated and released from the hospital but was not arrested until nearly two weeks later.
"He evaded arrest," Sobieraski said. "He was supposed to turn himself in last Friday, but refused to, and we tracked him down."
