What makes a Homage Type Beat?
I approach every beat like I'm making a collage. I find a ton of sounds that inspire me and lay them out on the pads on the MPC, then press a bunch of buttons to make everything fit together and sound cohesive.
Trap BPMs (sometimes), dusty boom bap drums, multiple sample layers and texture chops that all sound like one sample, random FXs and vocal samples, etc.
The goal is to make the beat sound like a simple loop with enough variation to keep the artist inspired. When you break it down, there's a lot more going on than you'd realize upon first listen. The difference is in the details. It's all about the little things that add up to make what I consider a great beat.
